SECAC Recognizes VSU'southward Glenda Swan for Excellence in Teaching

VALDOSTA — Dr. Glenda Swan'south exemplary work in visual arts recently earned her the 2021 SECAC Award for Excellence in Teaching.

SECAC, formerly the Southeastern Higher Art Briefing, is a nonprofit organization that promotes the study and exercise of the visual arts in higher education on a national ground. Its Award for Excellence in Teaching annually recognizes an outstanding teacher who demonstrates exceptional control of his or her subject field through the ability to teach effectively, impart knowledge, and inspire students.

Swan began education two decades ago and joined the Valdosta State University Section of Art & Pattern faculty in Autumn 2013. She currently holds the rank of associate professor.

"I dear teaching students about how textile culture — the objects fabricated and used by people — tin reveal insights into the fashion people lived and thought, especially as we so frequently treat visual images as something to absorb rather than analyze," she shared. "I'm fond to the revelation that comes from students who come to understand that they can utilize detailed observation and inquiry to see beyond the surface and proceeds meaningful insight into a by fourth dimension or place."

Swan primarily teaches courses in art history and perspectives and enjoys researching ancient fine art. She said she works very difficult to brand the material from the past as intelligible and relatable as possible to the current lives of her students.

"I e'er enjoy introducing students to visual civilization, either in Introduction to the Visual Arts or Art History Survey," she explained. "My love for mythology in fine art is axiomatic from the perspective form I created on World Mythology in Fine art. Still, it is always special to share topic courses on my academic specialties with students, such as Roman Life in Pompeii or Greek Mythology in Fine art. The report of gender was not something that was formally role of my ain pedagogy, but I have relished the opportunity to share important perspectives most its display with my students in Gender in Art."

VSU honored Swan in 2020 with its Presidential Excellence Award for Scholarship of Education and Learning, recognition of her unwavering efforts to produce innovative scholarly work on the science of instruction and learning and to regularly contribute new questions and knowledge on the discipline. She currently has a book in grooming for Palgrave Macmillan chosen Re-Envisioning the Material Past: How to Educate and Engage Modern Students Using Visual Civilization.

"As someone who turns down the lights when form begins in gild to show images — often from ancient cultures — information technology was quickly evident to me how important it is to observe to ways to finer engage students," she shared. "I employ a lot of dissimilar approaches to the material and make students an active office of course discussion and content, every bit well as provide them with a variety of materials and activities to support pupil learning. I think transparency in instruction is very important, so I besides strive to explain to students how grade activities are designed, every bit well every bit scaffolded, to help them to build discipline-based skills and chief content. Ultimately, because of my belief in the primacy of student-centered didactics, I work very hard to find every bit many ways as I can to be a supportive partner of student learning in the classroom."

Over the years, Swan has spent countless hours designing a lot of her own active learning activities, evaluating their effectiveness, and sharing them at conferences and in articles to become feedback outside her own classroom. She said that encouraging appointment and understanding of non-gimmicky objects and images with general instruction students as well as fine art majors is a challenging task — i non normally found in the scholarship of teaching and learning.

"I strongly encourage other faculty to look for opportunities where they tin share the results of the time and try that they spend evaluating educatee success in their ain courses, even if that sharing starts with something simple like peer-review or participation in a educational activity circle," she added. "Students shouldn't be the only ones who go to experience the joy of learning new things."
